R1 Fork
Conversion
Section

Here you will find only pictures of my R1 Fork Conversion

It was right around this point that i decided i would do the conversion.

I didnt have to take off much because i was rebuilding.

Just looking into the possability of swapping ignitions.

Decided against swapping the ignitions.

Borrowed the jack stand again and went to town.

I kept all the bushings and whatnot in order with zip ties.

And i thought it looked wierd before i started the conversion.

I zip tied all the control cables and a few electrical harnesses to keep them out of the way.

The first of many boxes.

I spent about a hour just shining these babies up with coleman fuel.

These are off a 2003 R1. I picked them up for $200.00 plus shipping.

I was able to find a brand new black fender on ebay.

Aside from the main fender part, i needed to order the mounting hardware and hose clamps.

I ordered the hardware and hose clamps from partsfish.com.

The steering stem nut is 36mm. I ordered one the night i started in on this project, i couldnt find it in any stores in my town.

The 36mm 1/2" drive socket. I used the rag so it wouldnt scratch the upper tripple.

Just the socket wrench by itself didnt give me enough leverage. I used this steel rack piece to help loosen the nut.

Again, i used zip ties to keep the parts in order.

One last nut jam nut holding the lower triple on. once removed, the stem and lower triple were free.

The upper and lower barings.

The R6 lower tripple and the stem i will need to use on the R1 trees.

Another look at the frame without the stem in place.

I found this complete set on ebay. It's off an 01 R1.

The R1 ignition harness is about 9" shorter than the R6's.

I stripped the plastic sheathing back to give me some room to work.

Two of the wires are thick, and two are thin. I matched up some aircraft quality electrical wire for each.

Making some progress.

Done with soldering and the heat shrink tubing. Ready to wrap it all up.

I wrapped electrical tape around the bunch at an angle as tight as i could.

The finished product. I was happy with they way it came out.

Installing the R1 lower triple.

Getting the first look at the new triples and clipons.

Another view.

Installed the forks and front wheel.

I like the looks of everything.

One piece at a time.

The new plastics make their appearance

NICE!!!

R1 Fork Conversion Details

I mounted the front master cylender straight to the upper tree.

No need for horn mounting bracket.

Here's a good picture of how i mounted the horn to the lower tree.

You can see i used a brass washer between the calipers and the forks.

I was told to space them off, so i used some extra break line washers.

R1 Stem Press Details

Here's what the stem looks like before pressing the stem out.

The lower bearing race will slide off when the stem is pressed through the tree.

You can see here how the stem is attached.

There is a small lip ont he lower tree where the snap ring rests.

This is the stem with the snap ring.
